It might be necessary to use a bark collar on your pet dog. There are just some dogs that seem to bark more than the regular dog, and they might even do this all throughout the day and night.

This may be tolerable for you, the pet’s owner, but the neighbors would probably disagree. Some neighbors work at home or sleep during the day, depending on their work shifts. Dogs that bark excessively at night would disrupt many a neighbor’s nightly rest. This might result to tension or hostility from your neighbors. Worse, they might set law enforcement agents on you.

Collars shorten corrective procedures. Instead of enrolling your dog in a long and expensive behavioral corrective program, you can use a collar instead. There are different kinds of collars. All of them however work under the same principle. Collars have sensors that detect dog barking and vocal cord vibrations. Once the device picks these up, the corrective measure is activated.

One collar type releases citronella. Dogs are known to dislike this scent and will learn to stop disagreeable behavior when exposed to it. As long as the collar is positioned correctly, the spray nozzle is designed to deliver the scent to the nostrils and away from the eyes. These discharges are not known to cause skin problems in dogs.

Another measure is a high-pitched sound. With the use of ultrasonic technology, this sound comes out upon detection of the bark. It is unpleasant to the dog, and so he will learn to avoid barking. Fortunately, this frequency of sound can only be picked up by dogs, so there is no need to worry about the neighbors complaining.

The third type is controversial because it uses electricity. When the dog barks, he is rendered a mild shock of low level electricity. Although there is no great deal of injury dealt to the dog, many pet owners find the idea inhumane.

There are still many dog owners that do not agree with the use of the bark collar. That is because they think it is cruel to cause any degree of pain or discomfort to their pet. If this is your stand, you can opt for a behavior correction program instead. However, it will take some time before your dog is properly trained. It is also expensive and not a hundred percent effective.

Other alternatives are more brutal than collars. Some owners may resort to vocal cord surgery or even euthanasia to silence barking dogs. When viewed in this light, collars definitely appear less unpleasant.

Of course, there are considerations while using a collar. Experts recommend that you have to make sure that your dog’s age and size is fit for the collar. You also have to evaluate the dog’s reason for barking. Sometimes it is just a normal response to something that scares him, or it could be emotional reasons like the lack of attention and presence from the owner. It would be cruel to stop him from barking in such cases.

Finally, find out which bark collar is best for your type of dog. Different collars work on them differently, and he might be more agreeable with one compared to another.

Want to know what animal you are? Find out the historical origins of the Chinese New Year animals.

The event of Chinese New Year is without a doubt considered to be the most important event in the Chinese lunar calendar. The cultural celebrations have been going on for years and the festive spirit is pretty much alive even today. The unique characteristic of the Chinese New Year is however the twelve year cycle that associates the coming of the year with an animal symbol.

The Chinese New Year animal follows a twelve year cycle and hence repeats. According to their present status, the following year should be the year of the Ox. The ancient philosophers of China have done a research on the behavior of the animals and have drawn a similarity between their personality characteristics and human nature.

Hence a person conceivedin the year of a particular animal is considered to have certain behaviors found in that particular animal. The individual born in the year of the ox for example is supposed to have good organizational skills, they are considered dependable and loyal as well as patient and strong.

It is believed that the twelve year concept of the animals representing each year is deduced from the Buddhist dharma. According to the legend Buddha himself summoned the animals prior to his coming to the Earth. Moreover, a competition was held amongst these animals where the animal that came first would be assigned to the first year.

When the race began, the competition was challenging. The act of betrayal was seen in the rat who made a deal with the cat but eventually didn’t keep his word. All along the race it looked like the ox would win as he meanderedthrough the crowd but little did he know that the rat was riding on his back all through the race and just when the ox was about to finish the race first, the rat leaped off his back and claimed the first position.

The first year of the twelve year cycle as a consequenceof the race was the year of the rat as he managed to end the race in first position. This year is followed by the year of the ox as the rightly deserving animal came second unfortunately. Then the ox is followed by the remaining of the animals on the basis of the position they finished the race in. the Last in the race was the pig!

If you are in a doubt as to why just twelve animals came to Buddha and why only these specific animals came, then do not look for any answers to such questions. As a matter of fact, this is nothing but an ancient culture which has been just made alive up till today and is strongly followed. As a token of honor and appreciation for their coming, Buddha assigned a year each to the animals.

So you want to set up a fish tank, well the first thing that I will tell you is that you have to be patient and should not jump right into putting fish in your tank. In this article I will be explaining all of the steps to setting up a fish tank for tropical fish only.

Before you go out and start buying aquarium equipment determine what kind of fish that you will want to put in there and how many. This is necessary as you will need to know what size tank to get, if you are on a budget you will have to work with it. The general rule is for small to medium fish is 1 inch per one gallon of water.

Some of the things you will need to set up a tropical fish tank will consist of the aquarium itself, a stand for the aquarium, filter pump, heater pump, thermometer, water conditioner, bacteria supplement. Some other additional options you can add to your fish tank would be a lamp, decorations and wall paper for the back of the fish tank.

Now that you have all the items you need next is to set up the stand and put the tank on it. Make sure you choose a good spot that will not be blocking anything you will need to get to later on like receptacles, air vents, etc.

Next fill the tank up with water to the top, do not worry about putting any conditioner in the water yet as we are only testing to see if the tank has any leaks. Let the water sit in the tank overnight, and in the morning check around the tank for any signs of water, once you are sure there are no leaks you can empty the tank.

While you are leak testing your aquarium you can start filling up jugs of tap water. Mix the tap water with water conditioner as fish do not like plain tap water. I also add bacteria supplement to the water also. Make sure you follow the directions on the water conditioner bottle exactly.

Next you can start adding gravel, make sure that you rinse the gravel very good. Since the tank is still empty you can start putting in the gravel and decorations. It is very important to make sure that everything that you put into your fish tank is washed well, as it only takes a little bit of dish soap to kill fish.

Once you have it decorated set up the rest of the equipment, the filter pump, the heater, overhead light, etc. Start adding all of the pre-treated water into the tank, once you have it to the top turn on your filter pump and heater. Let the water cycle for about a week before adding fish, make sure the water temperature supports the fish you want.

Let the fish tank cycle the water for at least one week. After that one week you can add a couple of fish to get the tanks ecosystem in action, but do not add anymore fish for at least 5 weeks. Be patient and your fish will be healthy and live for a long time.

Keeping chickens is becoming very popular, and it is not just done on farms any longer. There is a boom in raising chickens in the suburbs and in cities. Small chicken coops allow for non-farmers to furnish healthy, yummy eggs for their family while as well creating a feeling of self-sufficiency and a association with our agricultural roots.

Eggs produced by hens brought up on pasture are nutritionally superior to eggs presently sold in supermarkets. They have less cholesterol, less saturated fat, more vitamin A and E, more omega-3 fatty acids, and more beta-carotene. Organic eggs produced in your backyard are a lot tastier, too.

Chickens are in reality a lot like any other pets - they bond with their owners, they get along well with children, and just like any pet, they are full of surprises. It is now possible to have your very own healthy, happy flock of hens, not to mention a non-stop supply of flavorsome eggs, in your own backyard. All that is needed is a well-designed chicken coop and some land where the hens can move around.

To have a flourishing and happy flock of hens, they first need satisfactory floor space. 6 square ft of floor space per chicken is perfect. In addition, the chicken coop has to be dry and well-ventilated, with plenty of oxygen. The right ventilation as well permits excess moisture, ammonia, and carbon dioxide to escape. If the chickens are dry, then they will stay warm and safe, even in cold weather, and the happier and healthier the hens are, the more eggs they will produce.

A added advantage of raising hens is that they produce high quality manure from their droppings that is rich in nitrogen. This manure is a natural fertilizer and can be recycled into the chicken owners garden or even sold. The average chicken produces 250 to 300 eggs per year, so unneeded eggs can also be sold to bolster your family income.

There are numerous advantages to having a small chicken coop. As well as the fabulous eggs and valuable manure, a small chicken coop is portable. In addition, raising chickens is a fantastic opportunity for children to learn lessons about responsibility, hard work, and the value of money. With all these benefits, it is not surprising that raising chickens has become such a popular interest.

Dog food you find in stores isn’t always the best for your four legged friend. Cheap dog food has been known to be more filler than substance, and can lead to problems down the road in the health of your canine. Knowing what your dog should be eating will help you make smart decisions.

Meat is full of good protein. The problem is that the protein in cheap dog foods comes from sources that aren’t so healthy for dogs. Good protein comes from rich red meat and chicken products that are prepared in a wholesome manner. Dogs can notice the difference in taste, but more importantly the high level of good protein will keep immune system levels and a dog’s ability to heal at a good level.

Fish isn’t something that dogs eat a lot of; it’s something that is more associated with cats. Fish has the essential fatty amino acids that is important for show dogs that need a fine coat and healthy exterior. It also stimulates the healing process. Herring and trout are common sources of fish in dog food products.

A dog that is looking tired may not be getting its fair share of grain products. Grains have carbohydrates in them, which are great for long term energy. This can come from corn or wheat, but more expensive dog foods use wheat since it is easily digested and has extreme health benefits. Corn is reserved for cheaper brands that are still edible, but perhaps not as healthy or tasty for the pet.

Those who are keen on feeding pets know that rice is excellent when a dog has a digestion problem. Rice that is present in dog food acts the same way- enabling the dog to get through digestion problems and keep the digestion tract healthy for the future. If your dog seems to have serious problems on a long term basis, it is probably safer to be proactive and get the pet to a veterinarian for a routine health check up.

If you are given the choice of eating a fresh fruit or one that has been canned in manufactured circumstances, odds are you will go for fresh fruit. The idea is the same for pets, although not just for taste. Organic foods that are put into dog food are much more healthy than the synthetic ingredients that are put into dog food. Factory made food isn’t always bad, but the majority of dog food is sold so cheap for a reason.

Final Thoughts

When you first get your pet, it isn’t uncommon to go through several different types of dog food brands. You should find something that your dog likes, your budget can afford, and one that has all of the previously mentioned ingredients. Don’t take shortcuts, or your dog’s health may suffer.

Have you ever been plagued by dog fleas? Or to be more precise, has your dog ever been plagued with dog fleas? Let me tell you, it’s no fun for either of you. There are a number of things that you must do in order to get rid of the fleas and keep them from coming back. Here’s a step-by-step method to getting rid of the pesky little critters.

In order to rid your house of fleas and prevent them from coming back, you need to understand that the adult fleas on your dog make up only about 5% of the flea infestation - the other 95% in various stages are living in your house and yard. Therefore it is very important to do a total treatment (at the same time!) of all possible flea locations, and get rid of the fleas, flea eggs, larvae and pupae.

1 - Get rid of the fleas in your house - get as many fleas out of the house as possible, which means removing your dog while you are treating your house. Fleas live on and around the floors, in cracks and crevices, and on objects that your pet has been in contact with. Pick up any objects that can be washed, and launder these items using the hot cycle. This will include your pet toys, dog bedding, throw out any dog food that is in or around the dog bowl, your clothing, bedding, cushions etc. Any where it is possible for fleas to live, or lay eggs, needs to be cleaned.

Vacuum the whole house and any upholstered items REALLY WELL! Make sure to get underneath the bed. Vacuum out your car if your dog has been in the car. Then throw out the vacuum bag once you are finished, or flea eggs and larvae will hatch and re-infest. Clean your hard surface flooring with soap and water. Clean the floors in your garage, basement or patio if your dog has been in contact with those surfaces. Finally, with all animals and people out of the house, arrange to have a house flea treatment.

2 - Kill the fleas in your yard - at the same time that you have your house treated with an insecticide and IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) combination, you should have your yard and any other area your dog frequents treated as well. Fleas like heat and humidity, but don’t like bright light, so make sure to get under decks and in cracks and crevices where they like to hide.

3 - Kill the fleas on your dog - give your dog a bath with dog shampoo. Once they have dried off use a flea comb to check for any fleas that you have missed.

4 - Kill fleas for the next 2 weeks to prevent re-infection - 2 weeks after the initial treatment, any fleas in the larvae stage which were impervious to the chemical treatment will now hatch and reinfest your home. After the initial treatment, make sure to follow up with vacuuming, floor washing, laundering and pet bathing regularly over the next two weeks, and your chances of catching young fleas before they have a chance to re-infest will be greatly increased.

Control Barking With Respect

A dog has to respect your leadership to be a happy, well-adjusted, and well-behaved pet. If your dog barks to get you to play. She is not inviting you to play. she is harassing her owner to play. In fact, I’d even say bullying. And even worse, the behavior was being reinforced by the owner’s capitulation - effectively, giving in to this behavior taught her that to get what she wants, she has to make a noise - and she has to keep it up until her goal is achieved.

Play-time, rewards and affection are all important parts of a dogs life, but you must be in control of when and where they are given. If your dog learns barking is the way to get the things it wants, you are going to have a very noisy house. Your neighbors may not like it much either.

To prevent this type of bullying behavior from your dog, you must be willing to prove to him/her that you will not be so easily manipulated. The simple way of doing this is to ignore him or her. This does not mean to turn your back on your dog and act as if noting has happened, you need to take an active role in correcting this behavior. This means showing your dog though your body language that the behavior being displayed is not worth your attention.

Ignoring your dog in the right way is the most effective way to end the barking manipulation. Simply put, give your dog the cold shoulder. When he/she tries to manipulate you with their bark, turn your back to them. Don’t look their way, turn your head and eyes away and present your back to them. Don’t even say”no!’ to them. This will likely dumbfound your dog and cause the to bark louder and harder. This is especially true if you have given into them before and reinforced the barking behavior. Expect the barking to get worse before it gets better. Remember if you give in at anytime, the dog wins and you reinforce its behavior.

As in all aspects of dog training, consistency is very important. You must ensure that you don’t change your mind halfway through and give in to what she wants - because by doing so, you’re teaching her to be really, really persistent (”OK, so I just need to bark for ten minutes instead of five to get a walk,” is the message she’ll get). But what can you do in other situations where bullying isn’t an issue and you just want her to stop the racket? If you want to get the message across that you’d like her to cease fire and be quiet, the most effective thing you can do is to use your hands. No, I’m not talking about hitting her: this is a perfectly humane, impact- and pain-free method of conveying that what you require right now is peace and quiet.

You can do this by:

It is best to allow for dog to calm the barking it’s self. (it is kinder and more effective if your dog is allowed to express him/herself before asking to be quiet.) If he/she does not stop barking in a reasonable time, reach out and clasp your dogs muzzle gently, but firmly, in your hand. He/she may try to shake you off or pull away, so it helps to also grab the collar with your other hand for more control. This method works for two reasons: One, it automatically stops the barking(because a dog can not bark with its mouth shut.) Two, it make things perfectly clear that you are in-charge and should be listened to without hesitation.

Make sure you hold your dogs muzzle and collar until they have accepted your authority. They have accepted your authority when they stop wiggling and trying to break free from you. Once they have calmed down hold on for one or two more seconds, then let go and give them praise. This method is a short-term fix, there are some other things we can do to cut down on the over-all barking.

The number-one cause for unwanted barking (as in, the kind of barking that’s repetitive and is directed at nothing) is nervous, agitated energy - the kind she gets from not getting enough exercise. Most dogs function best with one and a half hours’ exercise every day, which is a considerable time commitment for you. Of course, this varies from dog to dog, depending on factors like breed, age, and general level of health. You may think that your dog is getting as much exercise as she needs, or at least as much as you can possibly afford to give her - but if her barking is coupled with an agitated demeanor (fidgeting, perhaps acting more aggressively than you’d expect or want, restlessness, destructive behavior) then she almost definitely needs more.

The good news is you can fix this problem fairly easily: you will just have to exercise your dog a little more. Try working in an extra half hour of exercise a day, that 30 minutes a day can make a world of difference. If this is impossible, you may consider hiring some one to walk your dog for you. If this is still impossible, you may have to except the fact that you are going to have a loud, frustrated and agitated dog until things change.

The second most common cause of excessive vocalization in dogs is too much ‘alone time’. Dogs are social animals: they need lots of attention, lots of interaction, and lots of communication. Without these things, they become anxious and on edge. If you’re at home with your dog, you’re not paying attention to her, and she’s spending a lot of time barking at what appears to be nothing, she’s probably bored and lonely and would benefit from a healthy dose of affection and attention.

Well how do you remove that nasty cat urine smell? As you obviously know, a cat’s urine has a very horrible smell and getting rid of it can be a really difficult job. Also remember that cats like to urinate on the same area if you didn’t really clean it thoroughly. It’s best to put some muscle into it and make sure the affected area is really cleaned out.

Steps to Remove Cat Urine Odor

Bring out your paper towels and put pressure in the area where your cat urinated. Make sure to use the towels to dry up the area and use enough towels if necessary just to remove the moisture from the carpet. Once you’re sure that the urine is out then can remove any excess leftovers on the affected area.

Next, you want to get your spray bottle and add a solution of water and white vinegar. This mixture will help to eliminate the horrible smell of the urine that can still be present in the carpet. It’s very easy to remove but you have to put in an extra effort in cleaning after spraying to make sure it is dry enough. Just like I said above, this will prevent your cat from urinating in the same spot.

Scatter a crystalline powder like DeScent in the carpet after drying it up. This will help you to remove cat urine smell that are still on the affected area of the carpet. Important thing to keep in mind is that you must make sure that your cat can never again smell their urine so they will stop urinating in the same spot again and again. If you have a male cat then they are more likely to mark their territories.

Remember these steps and you will be on your way to getting rid of that nasty cat urine smell. Quickly clean the affected area so your cat won’t have to pee in your carpet again. If you delay in cleaning your carpet then your cat is going to urinate again and this will only make things harder for you.

It’s time to stop your cat urine odor problem once and for all. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars and hours of cleaning cat puddles. Go to http://www.squidoo.com/get-rid-of-cat-urine-smell
