Can animals talk? Can they really communicate with us? I often wondered about this myself. I grew up surrounded by animals and have always felt a really close bond with them, but to talk to them? Was animal communication possible? I wasn’t sure; it all seemed like realms of fantasy, however enduring.

At the age of ten something happened that woke a deep desire in me. I saw the original Dr. Doolittle film and became convinced that animal communication was real. Here was a man talking to the animals! He understood them, loved them and helped them. That was who I was going to be!

The film was so beautiful it awoke a deep passion in me. Now I knew who I was going to be. I was going to be like Dr. Doolittle. I would share my life with these amazing creatures and would spend my time talking with them and healing them.

Sadly my dad didn’t share in my dreams. He was rather perplexed when he told me the film wasn’t real, it was purely a piece of fantasy. You can’t talk to the animals, and they can’t talk to you. After all, they are only animals!

The years passed, I started training as a medium and then Sullivan, a gorgeous border collie, entered my life. He’d had a bad start in life and had been extremely ill. Sadly his illness had started to affect his behaviour.

Happily, Heaven came to me, though not in a way I expected. Sullivan my young border collie became extremely ill. His behaviour changed and I was at my wits end of what to do for the best. Sitting quietly with him one evening he showed me pictures of his illness and told me that he had come to help me.

I was communicating with my dog! Dear little Sullivan had had such an impact on my life he had started me on the path of being an animal communicator. This was his purpose in life, to push through my doubts and show me the truth.

As the weeks passed it became obvious that Sullivan had come to help me learn animal communication. He had somehow got through my doubts and spoke to me. Bless him! Having realised my dream was within my grasp, I took my animal communication studies seriously. I now speak dog, cat, horse, rabbit and fish and I don’t need the stethoscope!

The Yorkshire Terrier makes a wonderful companion for most people, as they are loyal, friendly and amusing to be around.

General Appearance and Description

Yorkies are popular with people who enjoy being able to take their dogs with them everywhere.

It’s believed that the Yorkshire Terrier was originally a much bigger animal than the tiny dog that’s so popular today. Likely there was some selective breeding that went on and the dog gradually become smaller over the years. The first Yorkie who looked like the dog we know today was introduced at a dog show in 1870.

The Yorkie has a long, fine silky coat that is very straight and falls straight down from the spine on each side. Yorkie puppies are usually tan and black, while adult dogs are mostly steel blue on the tail and body and tan everywhere else.

Most owners who are not showing their Yorkies will keep the hair long and shaggy, but if the dog is being shown, his hair will be clipped shorter and given more form and structure.

The hair on the top of the head gets very long, so most owners will pull it back into a distinctive ponytail on the top of the head, while others will clip the top hairs so they stay out of the dog’s face.

Yorkshire Terrier breeders will tell you there’s no true Teacup Yorkshire Terrier. All Yorkshire Terriers are small and the teacup is not an official designation at all.

Basic Temperament

Yorkie dogs are entertaining for many reasons but one favorite character trait of many owners is the dog’s obliviousness to his size. He thinks he’s a bigger dog and will enjoy any adventure that a larger dog might enjoy.

Always energetic, the Yorkie is brave, extremely loyal to his owner and clever. He’s intelligent and a willing companion on any adventure.

Because he’s somewhat dismissive of his tiny size, the Yorkie will be willing to take on any challenge, and sees himself as a watchdog. He generally does a fine job of it, but his size ensures that he’s not a terribly good match for whatever walks through the front door.

Like most small dogs, the Yorkie needs clear direct leadership. You must lead the Yorkie with a firm but gentle hand.

If you establish that you are the leader of the pack, the Yorkie will submit to that, but if you don’t, he will exhibit troubling behavior problems like jealousy, aggression, barking, snapping and separation anxiety.

Care Required

All that fur means that some grooming is essential. The Yorkie’s coat needs to be combed or brushed at least weekly. If you keep the long hair on the top of the head tied back, you should replace the elastic or ribbon weekly.

The Yorkie develops plaque easily on the teeth, so they should be cleaned regularly.

Good for allergy sufferers, the Yorkie sheds little.

When looking at know more about Yorkie dogs, read and learn as much as you can because this is truly a fascinating little dog.

Exercise Requirements

While he might not be able to walk too far, the Yorkie likes s a daily walk, as well as regular play (but you should never substitute play for the daily walk). If you don’t give your dog a daily walk, he will be more likely to display behavior problems.

If you notice that your dog is running around the house in a bit of a crazy fashion, that’s a sign that he needs more exercise than he’s getting.

When you do take him out, be cautious of the conditions outside. Yorkshire Terriers are very sensitive to cold and prefer warm areas, as in warm climates, or simply being indoors on a cold day.

The Yorkshire Terrier is truly a very special dog.

Training

The Yorkie is easy to train, but he can be stubborn, so be sure to establish yourself as the pack leader and give him clear boundaries when you’re training him. That will pay dividends when you try to train him.

Some Yorkie dogs can be hard to housetrain.

Height and Weight

The Yorkie will be about 6 to 7 inches tall and will weigh right around 7 pounds.

Health and Longevity

While most Yorkies live long healthy lives, they do run the risk of a few health problems.

Most Yorkies suffer poor digestion and the owner should avoid giving too many special treats. Yorkshire Terriers should also be given dry food only, because they run the risk of serious tooth decay and dry food keeps their teeth sharp and strong.

Yorkie dogs can also run the risk of bronchitis; fragile bones can easily lead to fractures.

Most Yorkies will live to be approximately 12 to 15 years old.

Suitability

If you have an apartment, the Yorkie is an excellent choice. They enjoy being indoors and will find their activity inside happily.

Because the Yorkie considers himself a companion pet, he enjoys senior citizens and people who will be happy to take him on adventures. If possible, he should not be placed in a house with young children who might be a little too rough with him.

Yorkies can make surprisingly adequate watchdogs.

When you travel, your dog will naturally want to accompany you. He wants to remain by your side, even if that means being in unfamiliar territory. If you decide to take him with you, the challenge is to make sure his needs are met while you’re on the road. His safety and comfort are entirely dictated by the decisions you make for him. Here are four smart tips that will help you navigate the often choppy waters of traveling with your canine.

Tip 1 - Make An Appointment With The Vet

Before hitting the road, take your pooch to the veterinarian for a check-up. Make sure that he has received all of his vaccinations and that his certifications are updated. You’ll be required to show them not only when you board a plane, but when you check into pet-friendly hotels. Also, be sure to pack any medications that your dog needs while you’re away from home.

Tip 2 - Call The Airline Prior To Your Trip

Pet travel is not entirely standardized across all airlines. Each airline has their own set of rules. Call ahead to make sure that you meet any requirements they have. Ask about the certifications they need to see and the type of crate you should put your dog in prior to arriving.

Tip 3 - Make Your Pooch Easily Identifiable

Pets and their owners often become separated while traveling. This can happen just as easily when you travel by plane as by car. Make sure you’ve placed a collar on him with his identification tags securely fastened to it. The tags should list your name and contact information, your pooch’s name, and information regarding his rabies shots. Also, consider having him microchipped as a secondary form of identification. It’s a good idea to carry a picture of him with you that you can show people in the event you’re separated.

Tip 4 - When Traveling By Car…

Traveling with your dog by car requires a few extra precautions. Take plenty of drinking water for him and try not to drive long distances if he hasn’t had anything to eat. Don’t allow him to ride with his head hanging out the window; it’s far too easy for debris to harm his eyes. Also, keep in mind that your canine will need restroom breaks, even if you don’t. Stop often and have the resources handy to clean up after him.

If you’re traveling with young kids, make sure they understand that it’s unacceptable to tease or taunt the dog while he’s in his crate (road trips can be boring). Finally, don’t ever leave him in the car with the windows up. If possible, don’t leave him in the car by himself at all.

While traveling, your dog is dependent upon you in ways that are easy to neglect. Use the four tips above to ensure that you both enjoy the time spent together away from home.

Decorative pet stairs are an incredibly useful piece of pet aid furniture. They are particularly wonderful for smaller or elderly pets, however they can be a great benefit to pets of all sizes. As pets jump onto and off of a bed, sofa, or other piece of furniture, the impact it exerts onto their joints can cause severe problems later in life. Pet steps are a great preventative for that!

Naturally, the more decorative or durable style of pet steps will be priced a bit higher than those made for pure functionality. There are high-end doggy stairs available, for example, made of cherry wood with a carpeted stair surface and accented with moldings. Other models available are even made of mahogany and contain storage areas under the stair surfaces, as well as large and small pet stairs. These models are usually priced around $34.99. Most pet steps range from $30 to about $70.

Some decorative pet steps are collapsible while others are solid in structure. Collapsible pet steps are often constructed of polyurethane or other plastic material. However, some collapsible models are made of canvas or carpet stretched over a frame. You must remember that just because a set of steps is made of plastic, that does not mean it is not sturdy or in any way unsafe for your pet, as long as your pet is within the weight restrictions.

Pet stairs also vary depending upon the amount of steps they consist of. Some models have two steps, some three, and some have up to even six steps. Pet steps also differ in the amount of weight they can withstand over time. Solid wood construction would support more weight than pet steps made of a plastic frame, of course. Some pet steps offer more surface area on the stairs for larger animals. A few models are also made for use with an automobile. You may also find designs of pet steps for bed climbing assistance.

While the choices are vast, there is definitely a set of steps out there that are a perfect suit for your and your pet. If it helps, make a list of your pet step requirements, everything from height, to constitution, to color, and don’t stop searching until you find the right steps for your pet!
